The Canada Express Entry Program for Skilled Immigration :
Canada’s Express Entry system is designed to manage skilled immigration applications and accept applications of those who are most likely to successfully settle in Canada and contribute to the Canadian economy. The system has no deadline by which applicants must complete their profiles and there is no cap on the number of Express Entry applications that will be accepted. However, the numbers selected each year will depend on Canada’s annual immigration levels.
Skilled immigration applicants can use the Express Entry system to apply for permanent residence under one of four economic immigration programs, which include :
Federal Skilled Worker Program
Federal Skilled Trades Program
Canada Experience Class Program
and Provincial Nominee Program (certain components).

Applicants who already possess a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), or have been nominated for permanent residence by a provincial government will have a greater chance of obtaining an ITA. Candidates who do not have a job offer, LMIA or provincial nomination can register with Employment and Social Development Canada’s Job Bank, but this is not mandatory. Once in the pool, candidates should use other independent means to seek employment.
All applicants in the Express Entry pool will be ranked against each other using a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Under the ranking system, applicants are awarded points based on their skills, work experience, job offer, provincial nomination, and language ability. Candidates who receive the highest CRS scores will be offered an ITA. Once a candidate receives an ITA, they will have 60 days to submit an online application for permanent residence. Candidates who do not receive an ITA may remain in the candidate pool for 12 months. After 12 months in the pool, candidates must create a new online Express Entry Profile if they continue to meet the relevant criteria for their chosen skilled immigration program.
Invitation to Apply (ITA)
When applicants receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), they become eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Along with the ITA, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will provide instructions on which skilled immigration program to apply under and how to submit a complete application for permanent residence.
However, it’s important to note that receiving an ITA does not guarantee acceptance as a permanent resident. The application will be evaluated based on relevant criteria.
If an applicant is found to have provided false information on their Express Entry profile, their application may be refused and they may face consequences such as being deemed inadmissible to Canada or barred from entering the country for up to five years.
Applicants who receive an ITA will have 60 days to submit their application for permanent residence. During this time, it is recommended that they complete certain tasks such as verifying their language test results, obtaining police certificates, checking program requirements, and updating personal information.
- Ensure Language Test Results are Valid Before submitting their permanent residence application, applicants should verify that their language test results will still be valid on that day. Language test results remain valid for two years, so if the results will expire before submission, applicants have a few options. They can either retake the test, submit their application before the results expire, or decline their invitation to apply.
- Obtain Police Certificates All permanent residence applicants, as well as their family members over the age of 18, must obtain a police certificate. Additionally, each family member who lived in a country for more than six months after turning 18 must obtain a police certificate from that country. Processing these certificates can be time-consuming, so applicants should begin obtaining them as soon as possible.

Applicants should recalculate their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score using the online tool provided by the Canadian government if their personal situation has changed since receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). If the new score is lower than the minimum score selected in the same draw, it is recommended that the applicant declines the ITA.
If an applicant applies for permanent residence and it is found that their score is no longer high enough, their application will be refused, and the application fee will not be refunded. The following changes can lower an applicant’s score:
- Loss of a job offer
- Loss of provincial nomination for permanent residence
- Expired language test scores
- New language test results that are lower than previous scores

Applicants who have received an ITA and fail to apply for permanent residence within 60 days will be removed from the candidate pool. To receive a new ITA, they will need to create a new Express Entry profile and be accepted into the pool again.
Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a point-based system that is used to rank skilled immigration applicants in the Express Entry pool. The CRS is used to determine which applicants in the pool will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
Applicants are assigned points based on various factors such as age, education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience, spouse or common-law partner’s language proficiency, education and Canadian work experience, arranged employment, provincial government nomination for permanent residence, sibling in Canada, and skill transferability.
The highest score a candidate can receive is 1,200 points. The applicants with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residence during periodic draws.
The CRS prioritizes applicants who are likely to successfully settle and have a positive economic impact in Canada. Therefore, having an approved job offer or a provincial nomination for permanent residence can have a significant positive impact on an applicant’s score.
An approved job offer in a managerial field (National Occupation Classification TEER 0 Major group 00) is worth 200 points, while all other job offers (NOC TEER 1, 2, or 3, or any TEER 0 other than Major group 00) are worth 50 points.
A provincial nomination automatically results in 600 points being given to an applicant. This point allocation almost always guarantees that a candidate will receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
